Bethany Hamilton is a 26yr old professional surfer. Her most recent accolades include 13th and 3rd respectively at the 2015 Swatch Women’s Pro and 2016 Fiji Women’s Pro. The Fiji Women’s Pro was a particular triumph as she fended off the World No.1 to secure 3rd place. She is, without a shadow of doubt, one of the most well-known surfers in the world. Aged 9 she secured sponsorship with Rip Curl and her blossoming career was going from strength to strength as she competed in surf comps on her native Hawaii.
However, one October afternoon in 2003 Bethany’s life changed forever when she was attacked by a 14ft Tiger shark whilst out surfing with her friend and her friend’s dad. The shark had bitten off her left arm and Bethany lost 60% of her blood. Thanks to the quick thinking of her friend’s dad, who made a make-shift tourniquet and rushed her to hospital, she survived. The arms are two of the most important tools when it comes to surfing, not only for balance but for strength too. It’s hard enough to lift your bodyweight with both arms, imagine doing it with one! Bethany beat all the odds to go on and fulfill her dream to be a professional surfer.
Bethany Hamilton, we salute you. You are a true inspiration for women everywhere.
